Research Intern Career Opportunity in Nairobi, Kenya - Population Council

Position Title: Research Intern

ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: Six months

POSITION SUMMARY: Population Council Kenya is looking for an intern to support the implementation of the young feminist organizing (YFO) study in Kenya. The study aims to assess and synthesize evidence and insights on the impact (fostering improved outcomes and sustained change in government policies and society) of young feminist organizing/organization (YFOs) in Kenya and Mexico. The Population Council-Kenya (PC-Kenya) and Population Council, Mexico will work in partnership with other identified stakeholders to implement the study. The young feminist’s study will foster a close partnership with YFOs and through a research process to identify the impact and strength of YFO’s in two diverse settings with a growing and progressive young feminist movement. The study will meaningfully engage YFOs at all stages of the research implementation before, during and after implementing formative research and facilitating the co-design and implementation of a Participatory Action Research evaluation (PARe) in the two countries.

The intern will work alongside the PC-Kenya research team in the start-up of the YFO project where they will get an opportunity to:

  1. Strengthen their research skills to ensure they undertake research to the highest quality and ethical standards
  2. Engage with YFO stakeholders continuously during the project using tailored approaches to ensure evidence generated will inform future programs and policies.
  3. Learn how to communicate the evidence generated to diverse audiences of YFOs and stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following responsibilities will be refined as learning objectives in collaboration with the Research

Intern through the development of an Individual Learning and Training Work Plan.

  1. Gather information from different sources with a view to contributing to the finalization of the desk review.
  2. Work in the start-up of the YFO study by preparation of the FAP and Core PAR community meetings, research tools (e.g., developing, reviewing, revising, field testing, and adapting questionnaires), and carrying out any other preparatory work.
  3. Plan and coordinate outreaches to YFO, including participant recruitment and administration of research support, as appropriate to the activity.
  4. Ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and data collection activities and act as the primary point of contact for YFO and as the principal operational liaison for field activities.
  5. Conduct data collection and assist with data cleaning, analysis, and report writing as appropriate.
  6. Author progress, monitor, and evaluation reports on activities
  7. Present the study in various YFO stakeholder policy or technical working groups and/or networks
  8. Any other duties assigned by the supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Should have a bachelor’s degree in social sciences or public health and at least 6 months of experience in data collection, and data analysis – both quantitative and qualitative
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access), Qualitative analysis packages, and graphic packages
  • Proficiency in English and Kiswahili; written and oral.
  • A fast thinker with creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to take initiative, learn quickly, and be accountable for results.
  • Must be goal-oriented, dynamic, passionate, and self-starter
  • Should have a sense of urgency and a commitment to the timely completion of assigned tasks without compromising on quality
  • Should be an active member of a YFO or a Young Feminist activist with proof of prior activism in the past year
  • Extensive knowledge of issues relating to YFO and adolescents in Kenya

TERMS: The intern will receive a daily stipend of KES 2,000 to cover the cost-of-living expenses
