Terms of Reference: Consultancy Services for ToT Training and Mentorship on Small Business Management and Financial Literacy
Alight Horn of Africa, on behalf of one of our subsidiary partners, ORAM, is seeking to engage a consultant as provided in the details below:
Title: ToT Training and Mentorship on Small Business Management and Financial Literacy
Location: Nairobi and Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya
Reporting lines: Consultant will be reporting to the East Africa Program Manager, based in Nairobi, with support from the Senior Program Manager.

About the Project
In Kenya, our work is focused on supporting marginalized key population refugees and asylum seekers in Kakuma and Nairobi to achieve self-reliance through livelihood support, emergency support and capacity strengthening of Refugee-Led Community Based Organizations (RLOs-CBOs). The project aims to strengthen the resilience of these marginalized asylum seekers and in Kakuma and Nairobi, to build and sustain their enterprises. This will be achieved through enhancing the capacity of refugee entrepreneurs to run small and medium enterprises, providing financial assistance to establish and expand businesses and enhancing resilience through building community knowledge.
Scope of Work
The purpose of the consultant is to train and mentor refugee Trainer of Trainers (ToTs) on small business management, financial literacy and facilitation skills. The training will result in the establishment, growth and sustainability of enterprises run by refugees in Kakuma and Nairobi. 30 refugees will be training as ToTs; 15 in Nairobi and 15 in Kakuma. The assignment will be carried out between September and November 2023.
Objectives of the Training
The main objective of the training is to equip the ToTs with the content of the curriculum in Small Business Management, Financial Literacy and Management of Group Businesses, and enhance their competency in designing and facilitating training to train other refugee entrepreneurs.
The specific objectives are to:
- Provide practical Trainer of Trainer training to 30 ToTs to facilitate training to refugees on small business management modules such as; business idea generation, market research, business planning, marketing, costing & pricing, stock control, record keeping people & productivity, and business management.
- Provide practical Trainer of Trainer training to 30 ToTs to facilitate training to refugees on financial literacy such as; budgeting, money management, goal setting, and loans and savings.
- A module on the establishment of group enterprises, including roles & responsibilities amongst group members, division of labor, profit and loss sharing, and business operations.
- Provide Post-ToT training mentorship as the ToTs deliver training to other refugees.
By the end of the training, the participants should demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:
- Sound knowledge of the various modules of small business management and financial literacy. following modules;
- Adult training methodologies and techniques;
- Planning and conducting training and providing post-training support to businesses.
- A better understanding of practices that sustain business growth and expansion.
- Understanding legal requirements of the businesses in Kenya.
Key Activities and Deliverables
- Provide an inception report, and detailed work plan to include, training and approaches.
- Provide Trainer of Trainers training to 30 clients on small business management and financial literacy; 15 in Nairobi and 15 in Kakuma.
- Enhanced facilitation skills in adult training methodologies and techniques by the participants.
- Provide the participants with the training materials including training manuals, guides, and tools needed to deliver the training; soft and hard copies.
- Provide Post-ToT training mentorship as the ToTs facilitate at least one training workshop to other refugees.
- Maintain trainer professional records not limited, to photos, participants list, lesson notes, participants feedback, and other recordings.
- Participant certification: The consultant will issue certificates to participants.
- Provide reports as follows:
- Inception report;
- Post-ToT training report;
- Post-mentorship report;
- Final report within 2 weeks of completion of the assignment, not more than 25 pages, accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the outcomes, challenges, and recommendations
Additional information
ORAM will cover the cost of the venues, meals during the physical workshops, and internet & transport allowances for the participants.
Qualifications
- Degree in entrepreneurship, business management, microfinance, social sciences and related fields.
- At least 5 years of experience in conducting financial literacy and business management training.
- Knowledge and experience in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
- Substantial knowledge and experience in capacity building: adult learning methodological approaches and tools and strong skills in facilitation and designing trainings.
- Proven experience facilitating Trainer of Trainer modular approach, coaching and mentorship to SMEs.
- Strong understanding of refugee settings and good practices for livelihoods for key population and marginalized refugee businesses in Nairobi and Kakuma.
- The ability to communicate technical subject matter (in oral and written form) to people with varying technical knowledge/skills and from different educational and cultural backgrounds.
- Proficient in the use of English and Kiswahili to deliver the training.
