Research Consultancy Opportunity for the Gates Catalyst Impact Project

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal. Our researchers are contributing to the body of evidence about the critical issues in population health and wellbeing impeding Africa’s development in order to provide strong direction and recommendations to policy- and decision-makers at all levels. Our priority research areas are Human Development, Health and Well-Being, Data Science and Evaluation, and Population Dynamics and Urbanization in Africa. In addition to the research component, APHRC has other programmatic areas in Research and Related Capacity Strengthening, Policy Engagement and Communications, and International programs.

The APHRC invites applications for individual research consultants/ firms based in Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya for a project that aims at building implementation research capacities of Africa’s universities and research institutions.

SCOPE OF WORK

We are looking for talented individuals or firms with data collection expertise to facilitate data collection activities in universities and research institutions in Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya. The consultant will work with the project team to plan and facilitate data collection in various institutions in the three countries. The consultant will also assist in planning, inviting and coordinating stakeholder engagement workshops.

Under the guidance and leadership of the Program Managers, the consultant will perform the following:

  1. Act as the lead in data collection in universities, research institutions and with government officials.
  2. Participate in training for data collection activities.
  3. Conduct surveys to participants while adhering to guidelines as spelt out in the research protocols.
  4. Follow up, review and ensure institutions respond to the survey questions shared with them prior to online submission.
  5. Ensuring accurate recording of data provided by universities, research institutions and government officials.
  6. Complete and submit all data and audio recordings for cross-checking and verification by the APHRC team leader.
  7. Follow up with participants for missing responses or to correct any inaccurate responses.
  8. Report any challenges encountered in the field to the team leader/supervisor.
  9. Submit weekly progress reports/timesheets and maintain updated records and databases of assigned work.
  10. Follow ethical research practices and professionalism in executing assigned duties including, obtaining informed consent before conducting interviews and maintaining confidentiality of the information collected from program beneficiaries.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Master’s degree in Social Sciences with over 5 years of post-graduate work experience
  2. Experience in data collection, planning and coordination of stakeholder workshops.
  3. Should have onboard a staff that has training in communications.
  4. Experience in implementing large surveys and data collection in academic institutions.
  5. Great interpersonal  and  networking  skills  with  in-country  universities  and  research institutions.

PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE

This is an open contract that will run for 6 months.
