Crew Boat Captain Job Vacancy at an Island in the British Indian Ocean Territory

Our Client requires us to fill the following position for a new project in one of the Islands in the British Indian Ocean Territory.

Position Title: Crew Boat Captain

1 Position

Description of Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Performs the duties of a Crew boat Captain engaged in crew boat operations, boat maintenance and boat services on all navigable water of Diego Garcia, including but not limited to:
    • Crew boat operations for regular and special launches to transport passengers from/to ships/ship to ship and ship to shore in the lagoon.
    • Crew boat operations for medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) of personnel from ships in the lagoon.
    • Crew boat operations for repatriation of ship’s personnel.
    • Crew boat operations for Search and Rescue in the lagoon.
    • Emergency requirements and other boat service assistance required in the lagoon.
    • Fueling operation in Small Boat Basin (SBB), removal of bilge oily water and cleanliness of crew boats.
    • Fueling operation in Small Boat Basin (SBB), removal of bilge oily water and cleanliness of crew boats.
    • Dock and sea trials of crew boats after repair/maintenance, ensuring boats are safe, operational and seaworthy
  • Responsible for the safe operation of crew boats and safety of passenger(s) from point of embarkation and disembarkation.
  • Trains crew boat personnel and implements all applicable requirements for crew boat operations, conducts On-The-Job-Trainings (OJT) and approves/submits candidates for Personnel Qualification
  • Standard (PQS) or for qualification test of Harbor Pilot via Senior Crew boat Captain.
  • Identifies material requirements to accomplish maintenance/operational tasks. Coordinates with Senior Crew boat Captain for the required materials/supplies procurement of Annex-06 Supply.
  • Responsible for daily pre-operational check of assigned crew boat, lifesaving equipment, firefighting equipment and first aid kits. Responsible for seaworthiness and fueling of the assigned crew boat and all work areas clean and in good housekeeping.
  • Performs other duties as required to support contract requirements of A-06.
  • Must speak, read, and understand the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledgeable in use of VHF marine band radio (handheld or base type) and possesses basic radio communication skills.
  • Must at least have basic knowledge in electricity and electrical hazards.
  • Must pass overseas medical screening and be in good health.
  • Willing to work on swing and graveyard shift rotation, as scheduled by the PCT Supervisor.

Basic Job Qualifications: (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Shall have completed 40-hour classroom training (Boating Safety, Navigational Rules, Survival Craft and Basic Seamanship, including oil spill response training) and 150-hour of documented practical operating instruction on crew boat operations.
  • Working knowledge of Navigational Skills and familiar with waterways of Diego Garcia.
  • U.S. NSF-DG Port Operations Officer and U.S. Navy Contracting Officer approval to operate passenger carrying vessels.
  • Shall be trained and mission oriented.
  • Must speak, read, and understand the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • Must pass overseas medical screening and be in good health.

Job Specifications: Special Certifications or Training

  • Satisfactory completion of 150-hour OJT on crew boat practical operating instruction.
  • Qualification/Certification in Crew boat Personnel Qualification Standard (PQS) of Harbor Pilot.
  • U.S. NSF-DG Port Operations Officer and U.S. Navy Contracting Officer approval certification as Crew boat Captain.
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate and 2nd Class Swimming qualification certificate.
  • NSF-DG Facility Response Training.

Education:

  • High School graduate and vocational or apprenticeship course in Naval Port Operation facility or equivalent training course in small boat handling and operations.
  • Degree in Marine Transportation is preferred but not necessary.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) year in the operation and navigation of 16-meter passenger carrying vessels.

Salary is paid in dollars and the breakdown is as follows:

If one work for 40hours per week – $ 666.67 (Net Salary)

If one works for 48hours per week – $ 800.00 (Net Salary)

Overtime: Work in excess of 8 hours per day or work performed on a rest day and/or holiday, will be paid at the base salary rate.
