Position Title: Media Liaison Officer

Location: Isiolo

Role Summary: The position is broadly responsible for driving the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s Communications Strategy with an emphasis on supporting the organization’s outward-facing communication targeting local, regional, and global media.

The Media Liaison Officer will work closely with the Head of Development Communication to organically grow Lewa’s media presence while building the PR value of the organization through public-facing communication.

As Media Liaison officer, the incumbent will be responsible for planning, developing, and disseminating monthly media reports, and developing press releases with the support of the Head of Development Communication.

In addition, the Media Liaison Officer will help shape Lewa’s messaging and brand outlook through the generation of media publicity, to reflect the organization’s thought leadership in conservation management.

Critical to the role will be the need for the incumbent to have an existing network of media contacts both locally and regionally.

Job Role

The Media Liaison Officer, with guidance and leadership from the Head of Development Communication, will implement Lewa’s strategic communications strategy with a focus on external-facing communication.

Duties and Responsibilities

With guidance from the Head of Development Communication, the Media Liaison officer will implement the annual communications plan, which includes:

  • Grow Lewa’s PR value organically through the media.
  • Manage press and media inquiries.
  • Organize press visits to Lewa.
  • Act as a link between global media and Lewa.
  • Ensure Lewa’s thought leadership is captured well by the media.
  • With guidance from the Head of Development Communication, contribute to the design and production of communications collateral including handouts, brochures, and photographs.
  • Grow the Lewa brand as a thought leader in the conservation space through media and PR.
  • Create and promote visibility in support of the organization’s brand and reputation.
  • Together with the Head of Development Communication, plan, implement, and manage public relations events and evaluate their success
  • Serve as main point person for media inquiries, coordinate interviews with staff, and maintain a centralized list of journalists and media contacts.
  • Work closely with other departments to increase the visibility of their projects, programs, and activities through media and PR opportunities.
  • With oversight of Head of Development Communication, draft press releases, manage media contact database, and support media outreach.
  • Maintain and circulate organization-wide style guide to ensure consistent messaging and branding for all external communications. Produce talking points and standard responses to frequently asked questions.
  • Organize photo and video assets and ensure proper photo credits and recognition, and
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Communications degree from a recognized university.
  • 5 years of experience in journalism, communication, and experience or related field.
  • Knowledge of conservation work, both in Kenya and globally, and updated with global and national wildlife policies.
  • Experience in developing a variety of products used for fundraising and information-sharing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
