About Innovations for Poverty Action: Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is an international non-profit research organization dedicated to discovering and promoting effective solutions to global poverty problems.

IPA works in partnership with development partners and academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches potential solutions to poverty problems using randomized evaluations in the fields of health, education, microfinance, governance, and agriculture.

We also mobilize and support these decision makers to use these solutions to build better programs and policies at scale.

About the Project: The study is a randomized controlled trial to examine the impact of attending a low-cost private school (LCPS) on student learning outcomes. The study examines the effects on students ranging from pre-school to standard eight.

About the Position: The Field Manager under the general supervision of the Research Associate and  within the limits of Innovations for Poverty Action-Kenya policies and procedures supervises data collection.

Below is a list of some of the general duties and responsibilities of the Field Manager to be carried out as needed according to the determination of the Research Associate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Training

  • Co-lead intensive training for the field staff on all components of the study, including classroom presentation, role plays and survey administration practice.
  • Support development of training materials including standard operating procedures and field manuals in collaboration with the Research Associate.
  • Plan and oversee all procurement and logistic activities related to the training

Field and Data Management

  • Drawing of work plans together with SFOs and making sure that the work plans are followed
  • Support the development of field officers’ performance tracking documents and communicate the performance to the Research Associate.
  • Work with SFOs to ensure weekly and daily reports are compiled.
  • Field expenditure monitoring & tracking and updating of budget tracker.
  • Ensure adherence to research protocols, including monitoring data quality, data flow and ensuring data security.
  • Supervise field teams and timely trouble shoot field related challenges, including advocacy, logistics and staff performance issues.
  • Maintain project documentation including weekly and quarterly reports and ensure proper storage of files or data.
  • Help in programming surveys in SurveyCTO.

HR and Operations

  • Manage advocacy activities including obtaining introduction and permission letters needed for fieldwork.
  • Support recruitment and hiring for project fieldwork positions.
  • Manage project inventory.

Reports and Meetings

  • Write field reports accordance with IPA guidelines.
  • Help compile narrative reports as required by PIs and partners.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors’ degree or Diploma from a recognized institution of higher learning.
  • Experience in supervising and implementing data collection and/or field work activities, and managing teams of field officers, is required.
  • Prior work experience in managing electronic data collection systems.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Experience managing phone survey data collection team.
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player.
  • Intermediate user of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Data management skills using STATA preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with fluency in English and Swahili
