Salary: US – Starting salary for this role will be $76,000 to commensurate on experience, based on local benchmark for candidates outside of the United States.

Program / Department Summary

General Position Summary

The Senior Compensation Advisor will support the Director, Global Total Rewards by researching, designing, and implementing compensation strategies and programs that are aligned and integrated with our global compensation philosophy, applicable policies and guidelines, and other programs aligned to our talent management initiatives and strategy, with a priority towards diversity and equity.

This person will liaise with both US and global counterparts and focal points on benchmarking new and existing roles, advising on salary scale reviews, and leading or contributing to compensation project initiatives.

Essential Responsibilities

GLOBAL COMPENSATION

  • Develop and adapt the global compensation philosophy framework in alignment with the organization’s overall strategic objectives and vision.
  • Create and monitor salary structures and classifications while ensuring practices are compliant with applicable national laws and regulations. Establish & maintain competitive compensation programs to promote Mercy Corps as an employer of choice in the INGO sector.
  • Manage base pay and bonus programs globally including merit pay, bonus plans, promotions and salary changes.
  • Manage and conduct job evaluations, and evaluate new position descriptions/classifications for FLSA and EEO implications using market data and internal evaluations.
  • Advise and partner with department leaders, Global HR, and recruiters on compensation-related matters such as benchmarking new positions, job offers, promotions, internal transfers and department restructures.
  • Act as the first point of contact for benchmarking and evaluation of compensation requests.
  • Lead on the development of and report on, and ensure compliance with, applicable regulations such as Fair Pay Affirmative Action, EEO, Oregon Equal Pay Act, etc
  • Proactively identifies and analyzes organizational trends, market data, and industry practices to identify root causes and address compensation issues.
  • Serves as a coach to peers and team members and acts as a resource for escalated issues.
  • Leads compensation projects and initiatives with an enterprise-wide impact.
  • Represents compensation in cross-functional teams.
  • Develops learning resources and conducts training to educate management and employees on compensation-related programs, practices and policies, ensuring compliance with legal standards and strategic alignment.
  • Liaise with Birches Group for annual salary survey data and serve as delegate point of contact for Director of Global Total Rewards.

Works Directly With: Global Human Resources, Global Talent and other People, Strategy and Technology team members; Corporate Finance; Global Regional Directors and Teams, etc.
Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work.

Minimum Qualifications and Transferable Skills

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience managing Total Rewards programs, international experience and strong compensation experience preferred.
  • BA/BS in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field, preferred.
  • Multilingual is a ‘plus’ (English required with French, Spanish or Arabic as a second language).
  • Demonstrated history of providing excellent customer service and a high level of attention to detail.Ability to recognize and demonstrate sensitivity to team members’ personal situations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in compensation program designs to meet the needs of a globally dispersed workforce.
  • Knowledge of trends and developments in compensation, including pertinent industry best practices and federal and state compensation regulations including FLSA and various Equal Pay Acts.
  • Ability to understand how to leverage compensation programs to align with industry duty of care best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to explain complex or technical information in a relatable format to team members of varying backgrounds.
  • Must have strong analytical, mathematical and problem solving skills, effective organizational and interpersonal skills; strong written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Project management skills including the ability to create and execute plans within established deadlines.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment.
  • Strong organizational skills paired with strong process-orientation (able to develop / implement systems).
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Proven experience and intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suites, as well as project management tools.

Furthermore, they must have the ability to work independently, employ effective time management skills, handle frequent interruptions and shift priorities, exhibit effective customer service skills and work effectively with a wide variety of individuals including team members based overseas.

They will have the ability to work onsite and collaborate with team members, deliver compelling designs within the guidelines of specific project objectives and interact professionally and productively with HQ and other global staff.

Additionally, the individual will thrive in a fast-paced environment prone to rapid change and be willing to increase his/her responsibility level in the assigned areas.

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

This position is based in Portland, Oregon. It requires minimal international travel in support of Mercy Corps programs.

This position may be asked to travel on occasion.
